For the record, a couple of minor corrections. First, Zotero uses CSL (Citation Style Language) styles. Second, this is incorrect:

The case was dismissed in June 2009; the decision states that the reverse engineering of data files is not the same as the reverse engineering of software!

The judge dismissed the case on a technicality that had nothing to do with the substance.

One small clarification. Selected roll-out of OCLC’s web-scale management services will begin in OCLC’s Fiscal Year 2011, which begins July 1, 2010. Full-scale roll-out will occur in calendar year 2011.

I wonder if there’s more value in reaching into the spaces where content is created on campus than in providing some weak level of enhanced access for the ponderous objects that emerge. In some ways, I would rather see something like a library sponsored Google Wave installation provided for Faculty than a digital graveyard like DSpace.

I’d like to point out that I’m entirely to blame for this dish looking more oniony than it really is in the photo. It’s really just that I got served last and scraped out the bottom of the pot, and the onions were fried to such sweet perfection that I couldn’t leave any bits behind.

The trick is that, thinking like a programmer, a blip isn’t REALLY a song plus a comment, it’s an abstract data object that has both a song and a comment attached to it. That’s how a programmer thinks, but it’s awfully confusing and pointless to try to explain that to a user.

So I’m seeing a programmer writing that, and describing a blip as “a combination of a song and a comment” because that seems clearer to a Normal Person, but then forgetting this mental model when they got to end of the paragraph and reverting to their default programmer mental model, where things are attached.

I’m up way too late writing random comments on blogs about such things.
